<title>Louisiana Highway System from LDOTD source data, Geographic NAD83, LOSCO (1999) [rdcgeog3dldot]</title>

<descript>
This dataset represents the state maintained primary and secondary road network of Louisiana. The dataset includes Interstates, US highways, and Louisiana State Highways. This dataset was compiled by Louisiana State University from LDOTD source data. The dataset improved upon an existing digital map (linework) that had no attributes. The source dataset was derived from sources including USGS quads, aerial photography, highway plans, DOTD's control section road network and existing general highway maps. The source data set originated in 1983-1985 by digitizing 7.5' USGS quads on high precision input tables, but is updated regularly at LDOTD using the other sources mentioned above.
<purpose>This data set in geographic coordinates, NAD83 is a reference 'transportation' theme for the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office (LOSCO). The data is suitable for use at map scales of 1:24,000. In the shapefile version of the coverage, road segments sharing common Interstate, US Route, or Louisiana Route identifiers are merged into single features. In the corresponding Arc/Info coverage these features exist as separate segments, however each segment of the individual features share a unique identifier to allow all segments of a feature to be selected as a group. In many cases the segments comprising a feature are discontinuous. </purpose>
<supplinf>These metadata describe the Arc/Info coverage of name 'rdcgeog3dldot' and the shapefile of the same name it was derived from. These metadata also describe the data set 'primaryroads' which is how this data set (as a shapefile) was named on the 'Louisiana GIS CD: A Digital Map of the State.' The metadata for this data set are encapsulated into several documents and graphics files. The metadata are not complete if you did not receive the following files along in the data set: &gt;rdcgeog3dldot.mtd - this metadata in mp (metadata parser) compatible ASCII text form
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.html - this metadata in HTML form
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot_faq.html - this metadata presented as Questions and Answers
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.sgml - this metadata in SGML form
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot1.gif - thumbnail graphic of data set
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot2.gif - larger view of the dataset
The attribute and/or geometric component(s) of the data are provided as Arc export (.e00) file(s) and the corresponding three part (.shp, .shx, .dbf) shapefile(s) or standalone .dbf file(s) in the case an export file is a standalone INFO file. You should have received the following as part of the dataset:
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.e00
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.shp
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.shx
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.dbf
&gt;rdcgeog3dldot.prj - coordinate system specification file for shape</supplinf>

Topological and labeling tests, and attribute statistics were obtained with a quality assurance AML (qa_report.aml). <procdesc>The LDOTDROADS source data (a Microstation .dgn file) was converted from polyconic projection to geographic NAD83 coordinates using Intergraph MGE. This converted .dgn file was then converted to an Arc/Info coverage. Topology was built using Arc/Info, and the coverage was converted to a shapefile. Linear features were attributed with route numbers taken from the Louisiana Department of Transportation parish highway maps, which were used as a reference.
This step required that some segments in the shapefile were broken. Queries of the attributed database were then made to select features for segmentation. The database was then restructured for efficiency of use. Extensive QA/QC checks were made including converting the shape back to a coverage, projecting back to polyconic projection, and comparison of the overlay of that data with the source LDOTDROADS dataset.</procdesc>

A unique identifier (feat_id) was added to each of the 1633 features in the
PRIMARYROADS shape. Those features resulted from the merging of road
segments sharing a common combination of interstate, us_routes, and
la_routes attributes. The resultant shape was converted to an Arc/Info
line coverage consisting of 2707 arcs. Arcs that share a common feat_id
may be recovered as individual features. Because the coverage was only
'built,' but not 'cleaned,' the 60 pairs of arcs that cross without
intersecting are maintained.
